Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence, also known as EQ (emotional quotient), is the ability to recognise and understand one's own emotions and those of others. It involves the ability to manage and regulate one's own emotions and to use this understanding to interact effectively with others. Emotional intelligence is becoming increasingly important in personal and professional settings as it is critical to building strong relationships, managing conflict and achieving success.


Four key components to emotional intelligence :

  • Self-awareness: This is the ability to recognise and understand your own emotions, including strengths, weaknesses and triggers.

  • Self-regulation: This is the ability to manage your emotions effectively by controlling your impulses and adapting to changing circumstances.

  • Social awareness: This involves the ability to recognise and understand the emotions of others through empathy and active listening.

  • Relationship management: This involves the ability to use your emotional intelligence to build and maintain strong relationships by communicating effectively, resolving conflict and working collaboratively.
